Challenging development nets award win for first-time site manager Sandy

ESH Construction’s Sandy Young has won LABC Warranty’s Site Manager of the Year award for West Yorkshire for work on his first site as Site Manager.

Sandy fought off competition from Brian Farrar of B M Farrar Joinery and Graham Barber from Conroy Brook (Developments) Ltd at the LABC Building Excellence Awards, held at the Cedar Court Hotel in Leeds, for his work on an eight-unit social housing development.

Despite the compact size, Sandy’s Harley Green development in Pudsey was challenging, located at the end of a cul-de-sac on a sloping site by a former quarry.

Teamwork key to success

Sandy described the Harley Green site as “a small, sloping site on awkward ground.” He and his team worked round a quarry face and retaining walls, and with a single access road could only take on-time deliveries.

He had previously worked as a Section Manager but the Pudsey development of semi-detached homes for Connect Housing Association was his first as Site Manager.

Of the Site Manager award, Sandy said: “It was fantastic to get the recognition. I was really pleased and wasn’t expecting it at all.

“I would say a good site manager has to have a good team. It’s not an individual effort at all – you need everyone working with you and working well together.”

Sandy has already turned his attention to his next development, a 32-unit social housing development off Bodmin Road in Leeds for Yorkshire Housing.

Thanks to his West Yorkshire win, Sandy is also shortlisted for the LABC Building Excellence Awards finals taking place in London in November where he has a chance of being crowned overall LABC Warranty Site Manager of the Year 2019.
