Who is a Rising Star at your workplace? Nominate them for an award at The Bricks 2019
It can be extremely rewarding to see work colleagues develop as they grow into a role, especially if your expert tutelage has perhaps played a part. It is an achievement worth celebrating, and the reason why we include the Rising Star category in our annual Bricks awards.
The category is one of the select few at The Bricks where you are invited to submit your own nomination or nominate a colleague. Development-focused categories are judged and shortlisted by our experts.
All finalists join us at our glitzy annual ceremony in London in October. If you want to be one of them, you need to get your Rising Star nomination in by Friday 30 August. The good news is that it is a simple process using our online form, though keep reading to find out what we are looking for.
What made Britcon’s Declan Hunt our Bricks 2018 Rising Star?
According to Project Manager Mick Kobarenko, Declan (pictured above) joined Britcon at 16 while he was studying for his A Levels in Engineering and Business Studies. He worked for different departments and on various sites, and following A Level distinction grades he joined Britcon full-time.
His hard work and commitment to learning had only just started. Promotions to Assistant Site Manager and then Site Manager (at the age of 20) were accompanied by Construction Project Management degree course studies at Sheffield Hallam University. In 2018, in his degree’s fifth year, he wrote a dissertation and successfully managed a site where he was also involved in the design and planning process.
When he picked up his Rising Star award at The Bricks 2018, Declan was managing a 68-unit residential development in Scunthorpe, managing up to 30 trades people and running site inductions and toolbox talks. He was procuring materials, working with building control, overseeing project planning, health and safety, quality control and financial management.
Mick said: “Declan learned an exceptional amount of knowledge in a relatively short time and has gained so much respect from people in and around the business. I have no doubt that he is on course for greater things as he continues to grow as a professional in this challenging and demanding industry.”
What we’re looking for in The Bricks 2019 Rising Star

We are looking for an employee who demonstrates commitment to their development as a professional in the industry. They will:
- Be a graduate, apprentice or trainee, in the course of learning their trade
- Ensure consistent high levels of skills and service through their desire to learn
- Show a willingness to continue learning to develop their expertise
