Seafront development inspires Mark to win North West’s Site Manager of the Year title

A landmark development on Morecambe’s promenade has inspired M H Stainton’s Mark Bailey to win the North West region’s Site Manager of the Year 2019 award.

Mark fought off competition from Bloor Homes’ duo Paul Cummins and Wayne Marsden at the LABC Building Excellence Awards (North West) regional finals at Old Trafford cricket ground, for his work on The Broadway, a prestigious seafront apartment development.

Mark is no stranger to construction awards. He was site manager for M H Stainton’s Aldcliffe Park Meadow site which won The Bricks 2018 Development of the Year (1-10 units).

Challenges bring out the best in Mark

The Broadway is a seven-floor development of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments, including penthouses, featuring curved floor-to-ceiling glazing to make the most of the views across Morecambe Bay, the Lake District fells and beyond.

As well as facing adverse weather, Mark has successfully managed an on-site team of more than 50 to bring the uniquely specified detailing of the development to life.

He said: “The Broadway has been challenging and some of the detailing has been very interesting on the project. But I’m really proud of what we’re building, it looks fantastic and it’s definitely an asset to Morecambe.”

Mark’s whole career has been in construction, first working on home-build trades before a football injury prompted him to move into a more managerial role. He worked as a site manager for developers in East Lancashire before earlier career ties with Michael Stainton brought him back to Lancaster-based M H Stainton.

Mark admits he now feels at home working on more bespoke, quality-led homes.

He added: “I like the approach to quality and have really enjoyed working on this development.

“I was absolutely buzzing when I won the award. I genuinely didn’t expect it. I saw the other guys up for the award and they looked like they came from a good company too. But The Broadway’s a great project and I’m just really pleased to be part of it.”

Mark is now shortlisted for the LABC Building Excellence Awards finals taking place in London in November where he has a chance of being crowned LABC Warranty Site Manager of the Year 2019.
