Award season is fast approaching and we are working hard to ensure we celebrate the best of the best at The Bricks!
Our judges have been carefully casting their eyes over the best sites in each of the categories before deciding on the finalists, but what about those ‘Rising Stars’?
Why not take a look at what it means to win, from our Rising Star of 2015 himself.
We caught up with last year’s winner, Courtney Daniel of Jessup Brothers Ltd to see what he’s been up to since winning his award:
How has your role on site developed since winning the Rising Star award?
As a 27 year old Assistant Site Manager for Jessup Brothers, I’ve become more involved in decision making and taken on more responsibility on bigger sites, helping to develop up to 5 bedroom houses on one site and assisting with the development of 44 apartments for the over 55’s unsupported living.
Every day is a new challenge and nothing brings me more enjoyment than working in construction, I love it!
What are your main responsibilities on site?
Assisting the site manager to ensure that houses were at the required standard to pass inspections during the pre-plaster and finishing stages of the build, to organising various trades to carry out the works and monitoring the work to make sure it was done correctly.
On some occasions there was a lot of paperwork to plough through as well as overseeing health and safety measures, ensuring safe access and egress on site and working in a safe manner.
What other training and development have you undertaken to advance your skills?
Jessup have been very supportive in my development, giving me the opportunity to broaden my knowledge to allow me to perform better at my job. I have now completed an NVQ Level 3 in Leadership and Management Practice for the Construction and Built Environment Sector and undertaken a Scaffold Awareness, and Slingers and Banksman course.
What are your words of wisdom for the next Rising Star?
Work hard, show willingness to learn more about the industry and don’t be afraid to come out of your comfort zone.
How to nominate your Rising Star?
We all love to be recognised for our hard work so what better way to reward your most promising employees than with a Rising Star nomination?
So if you know someone who is a young graduate or apprentice in the construction industry showing consistent high levels of skills and a willingness to develop their expertise then complete the nomination form before 31st August to be in with a chance of attending the most exclusive award celebration of the year!
